Buying wall tiles: what actually matters
Check the tile weight per square metre before tiling a plasterboard wall
There is a limit to how much weight a sheeted wall will carry, and it depends on the sheet, the stud spacing and the adhesive. Large format porcelain on a standard plasterboard wall can exceed it, particularly if someone has chosen a floor tile for a feature wall because they liked the look. If you are going heavy or large format, that is a conversation with your tiler before you order, not after the pallet arrives.
Tile the wall before the floor, and leave a movement joint at the junction
Walls first means the floor tiles are cut into a finished line and the wall tiles are not sitting on something that will be disturbed. And the wall-to-floor junction wants a flexible silicone joint rather than rigid grout: buildings move, and a rigid joint at a change of plane is the first place grout cracks.
Why this stock is cheap, and what the actual catch is
Clearance tiles are not seconds. Everything here is first grade. It is cheap because it is finite: a line an importer is clearing, a colourway a manufacturer has stopped making, or the tail of a container that nobody wants to keep warehousing. The catch is not quality, it is that you cannot get more. On a normal tile you can go back in six weeks for another two boxes. Here you cannot, so the quantity you order is the quantity you will ever have.
